ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is a fusion reseach reactor withing the scope of an international research project with the goal of generating electrical energy from fusion. The reactor is based on the Tokamak principle and is under construction in Cadarache since 2007. The main scientific goals are the different methods and design for the plasma heating, diagnostics, and control as well as the testing of different blanket designs for the breeding Tritium. It is planned to achieve a operational time of 1 hour and the gained energy shall surpasse the applied heating energy by several times. Based on the current schedule (Jan 2020), ITER is planned to be operational for the first time in December of 2025.
