Thermal Cycling, Aging and Environment Tests
Most materials and components used in cryogenic application are exposed to a large number of cooling and heating cycles during their service life. To investigate behaviour and material characteristics after repeated temperature changes between deep cryogenic and up to 200 °C various test setups are in operation in our laboratory. Environmental and thermal aging tests are also available.
Cycling is often followed by other test campaigns for example an examination of mechanic properties on e.g. our universal testing machine. Below you find a summary of our test setups. You cannot find the exact test method you are looking for or your requirements differ from the specifications listed? Please feel free to contact us. We are constantly adapting our test methods to new requirements and will be happy to find a solution to your testing challenge.

Helium Lift

Cryoshock
The facility consists of a lift cable hoist above a fan heater unit, which is mounted on a dewar filled with liquid nitrogen or helium, depending on the required temperatures. The samples are mounted in a cage which can be lowered in the coolant or raised in the fan heater unit to cycle the temperature. By submerging the specimen in liquid nitrogen or helium a cryogenic shock can be induced.

Thermocycles
Especially in comparison to thermal cycling in vacuum chambers steep thermal gradients can be achieved. Depending on the heat capacity of the samples and temperature requirements up to 20 cycles/hour can be performed.

Application
Samples are enclosed in a cage with a diameter of 150 mm and can be stacked in a rack. Depending on the geometry, samples with a length of at least 450 mm and a weight of at least 3 kg can be tested.
The cage offers slots for four temperature sensors.

- Application:
- cryogenic thermal cycling
- thermal/cryogenic shock tests
- steep temperature gradients
Thermal Chambers
Within our thermal chambers samples can be cycled between -263°C (10K) and 200°C. A wide range of temperature gradients between > 70 K/min and < 1 K/min and specific temperature profiles can be set. Heaters and aerodynamic baffles can be integrated to ensure uniform temperature distribution or to generate specific temperature curves on the test sample.
In addition to the temperature, the humidity can also be controlled, to simulate environmental conditions.
A high amount of temperature sensors, in-situ measurements and additional costumer specific sensors can be installed. Also, functional performance and condition monitoring can be performed
- Application:
- cryogenic thermal cycles
- specific temperature profiles
- functional performance and condition monitoring
Thermal Lift
The thermal lift is designed to thermally cycle test samples between -120°C and 100°C.
To change the temperature, the chamber in which the samples are located is moved up and down between a warm and a cold chamber. This enables the test samples to be cycled very often (< 10 000) and up to 6 cycles/hour. Although high temperature gradients are possible, following precise temperature gradients proves to be difficult. A test in one of our climate or vacuum chambers is better suited for this purpose.
A high number of sensors can be attached to the samples and electronic measurements of the sample itself e.g. functional performance and condition monitoring are possible. This allows not only the cycling of material samples, but also the testing of components and systems. The installation space of the test sample compartment is 500 mm x 350 mm x 350 mm.
